SAC (Special Assessment Conditions) are formal supports provided to ensure students with learning, sensory, physical, or psychological diversity have a fair chance to show what they know during exams. These may include:

Extra time

A reader or writer

Rest breaks

A quiet space

Assistive technology
SAC applies to:
NCEA assessments, including the new literacy and numeracy co-requisites
International exams like IB and Cambridge (CIE) (depending on provider guidelines)
University/Polytech exams

Who is SAC for?
SAC is designed for students who experience barriers to accessing or completing exams under standard conditions. This includes students with:
Specific Learning Disorders (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)
Processing difficulties
Anxiety or mental health challenges
Physical or sensory impairments
ADHD
Autism
Other neurodivergent profiles

When should you apply?
Ideally, assessments are completed early in the year, allowing time for schools to trial the supports and submit a strong application.
Applications for SAC are especially important if a student is:
Preparing for the literacy and numeracy co-requisite assessments
Sitting NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 exams
Enrolled in international pathways (e.g., IB or CIE)
Preparing for Tertiary Exams without a prior psychological assessment.
Schools implement SAC under NZQA guidelines, and SAC-approved supports are used in supervised, exam-like conditions.

Why is SAC important?
Because assessments should measure a student’s knowledge—not their challenges with handwriting, anxiety, or processing speed. SAC ensures fairness by removing barriers that get in the way of a student’s true potential.
At Cambridge Educational Psychology Services, our psychologists provide:
